Majorities are Often Wrong

Civil discourse has degenerated into economic coercion and media histrionics… policies will be made by irrational actors feeding on raw emotion and needy celebrities seeking acclaim;  coercion rather than debate, compromise, and good policy.

**It is never advisable to enact policy which makes law abiding citizens, criminals.

Leave it to the Englishman, John Stuart Mill to explain what liberty in America really means:

“…one very simple principle, as entitled to govern absolutely the dealings of society with the individual in the way of compulsion and control, whether the means used be physical force in the form of legal penalties, or the moral coercion of public opinion. That principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection”

“One person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who have only interests.”

The folly of this gun debate is the belief building a majority makes an opinion “right”….. Mill astutely points out that majorities are often wrong– individuals cannot be forced to follow suit.

“Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.”
