The Use of Arms…

Gun-control activists refuse to acknowledge any argument for individual gun ownership… that utilizes original intent of the Second Amendment.  To them, gun ownership is a “cult,” “obsession,” or “fetish.”  They either dismiss or disparage the Framers and their motivations.

They knew what they were doing.

They absolutely refuse to accept the notion of gun ownership as a safeguard against tyranny…. Americans are so conditioned to the heavy hand of the state, infringements on personal freedoms are acceptable providing the appropriate level of positive liberty coincides with the subtraction. Privileges granted by the state are seen as a universal good.

Maybe there’s hope

Americans currently have such a narrow understanding of libertyindiscriminate sexual behavior, risque literature and music, and unfettered access to marijuana seem to be all recent generations truly seem passionate about.   The freedoms protected by the Bill of Rights are lost on them…

Tench Coxe, a Founder few if any millennials would bother reading… explained the need for personal gun ownership- and it was not neo-Freudian mumbo jumbo…

“As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms.”

Listen to this rap

Hamilton was more direct in Federalist #28-

“If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons entrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair.”

Majorities are Often Wrong

Civil discourse has degenerated into economic coercion and media histrionics… policies will be made by irrational actors feeding on raw emotion and needy celebrities seeking acclaim;  coercion rather than debate, compromise, and good policy.

**It is never advisable to enact policy which makes law abiding citizens, criminals.

Leave it to the Englishman, John Stuart Mill to explain what liberty in America really means:

“…one very simple principle, as entitled to govern absolutely the dealings of society with the individual in the way of compulsion and control, whether the means used be physical force in the form of legal penalties, or the moral coercion of public opinion. That principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection”

“One person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who have only interests.”

The folly of this gun debate is the belief building a majority makes an opinion “right”….. Mill astutely points out that majorities are often wrong– individuals cannot be forced to follow suit.

“Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.”
